Our Vineyard

Our Hand-Farmed Boutique Vineyard and Paulo Wines is Nestled in the Sierra Foothills wine region of California. This unique Northern California region is one of the oldest and largest wine regions in California, the area is known for its Barbera, Zinfandels, Petite Sirah and other robust varietals. Our vineyard is cultivated with deep respect for the land and rhythm of the seasons. Every vine is tirelessly tended to, from careful pruning in winter to the delicate harvest in autumn.

We farm sustainably, working in harmony with nature to preserve the vitality of the soil and the balance of the ecosystem. This hands-on approach allows us to truly understand each block of the vineyard, nurturing vines so they can express the unique characteristics of our terroir.

Our Winemaking

Our winemaking philosophy is such that we take the same thoughtful, deliberate approach to winemaking as we do with the vineyard. Our wines are made in small lots, guided more by intuition and taste than by formula.

Grapes are hand-picked at optimal ripeness and gently pressed to preserve their natural vibrancy. Fermentations are allowed to unfold at their own pace, and we use minimal intervention techniques to let the fruit, and the vineyard speak for themselves. The result is wine with a true sense of place, balance, elegance and expression.

Discovery

Paulo Wines was born when the founders, Paul & Kristin Laughton discovered a neglected property in Northern California’s Sierra Foothills Wine Region. What started as overgrown land with a broken-down horse barn, year-round creek, 1939 vintage truck and main house soon became their dream of creating a family estate with a boutique vineyard. After much preparation, they planted 1,800 Barbera vines, which flourished in the granite-rich soil and “Italian-style” vineyard design layout.

This type of layout with the rows only 4-feet wide and vines planted just 3-feet apart, the vineyard is 100% hand farmed and lovingly tended to. The property has now been fully renovated, and the result is a beautiful estate with a robust vineyard surrounding an adorable “Barn House”.

We so appreciate our family and friends who contributed labor, laughs and well wishes. We have a lot of room at our table, and we are thrilled you are here with us. Growing fruit and making wine is truly a labor of love but being able to share the bounty with our family, friends and MORE new friends is what truly brings us joy.
